        Bookmark Design Contest Winners

Our 4th and 5th grade students were invited to participate in a bookmark design contest.  Those who were interested created their own design on a bookmark form and returned to the library for voting. All of the bookmarks were on display and the kindergarten through 3rd grade students, along with staff, voted for their favorites.  Congratulations to our top 3 designers:  Jacob Weissenberger (5th Grade, Mrs. Riley), Anyssa Ball (5th Grade, Mrs. Davis), and Danny Peck (5th Grade, Mrs. Davis).  Jacob’s bookmark will be printed off and distributed to all Harrison students.  EVERY bookmark turned in was amazing – and many students had a difficult time deciding on just one favorite!  Thanks to all who participated, and a big congratulations to Jacob, Anyssa, and Danny!

        Dressing For the Weather

It is that time of year again.  It is cold and snow is coming.  Please remember to send your child to school with a warm coat, mittens, and hats.  Boots and snow pants are needed to play in the snow.  Students will go outside every day at recess to play when temperatures are above 10 degrees with the wind chill.

        Help Wanted

Mrs. Nederhiser is looking for parent volunteers to help in two ways. One is to cut out some things (some of them have been laminated, some of them are just cutting). This job could be done either at school or at home (even over Winter break!). The second job is helping in the leveled library. She is looking for a couple of parents who can commit to coming once a week or once every other week for about an hour. This job involves sorting and placing books back on the shelf. It can be done any time between 8 AM and 4 PM. If you are interested, please email her at tnederhiser@cr.k12.ia.us or give her a call at 558-1532. Thanks in advance for your help!

A new Iowa Future video, “Iowa, Did You Know?,” highlights the drastic changes occurring in Iowa and the world, and shows that schools are struggling to keep up in today’s dynamic new global environment. The video premiered at this week’s School Administrators of Iowa Conference.

This fast-paced video emphasizes the magnitude of the challenges ahead, the need for Iowans to support the changes that schools must make if our learners are to be career, college, and citizenship ready, and the imperative to do this now, rather than later.

The seven-minute presentation is aimed at all Iowans, from all walks of life. It may be used with a variety of audiences, including students, parents, community members, school board members, legislators—virtually anyone with an interest or a stake in Iowa’s education future.

The “Iowa Did You Know?” video is the latest of a growing number of resources in the
Iowa Future toolkit to provide school and community members with information and tools to help them lead or participate in education change efforts in their communities.

Scott McLeod authored “Iowa, Did You Know?” which is based on the popular general “Did You Know?” series written by Scott and others.

Watch the video below or on the
YouTube Iowa Future channel. Following the viewing considering using the accompanying discussion guide to begin an in-depth conversation in your group. The guide is designed to be used with all types of groups, educators and noneducators alike. Also available to provide for more thorough study and review, is a pdf of all of the 87 “Iowa, Did You Know” slides.

        School Safety Zones

The safety of all children is important to us.  For that reason, we would like to share school safety information and encourage parents to talk with children about the following safety guidelines:

        1. Be mindful of school safety zones. Cedar Rapids Police officers will be working to protect children starting the new school year, but we would like those driving students to school to remember to observe the posted speeds, not use cell phones while driving in school zones, use seatbelts and limit distractions in the vehicle.

        2. Crosswalks will be supervised by school staff and school crossing guards. Instruct your children to cross at monitored crossing sites instead of crossing in the middle of the street.  All students are required to cross at the supervised corners.

        3.  It is always safer to drop children off curb-side.  Please pull up next to the curb, on the school side of the street, and drop your child off.  Parents should not stop in the street (double park) and let students out.  We will work with the Cedar Rapids Police Department to monitor this.   If you are going to get out and walk your child in, please do not park in the yellow zone.

        4. If your child walks or rides a bike to school, you should travel that route with your child a few times so they know how to get to their destination. Monitor neighborhood activities during the hours that your child will be traveling to and from school so that you may choose the safest route. If your child is walking to school remind them to use sidewalks. If sidewalks are not provided, advise them to walk on the edge of the grass near the curb and against the flow of traffic.

        Harrison and Van Buren
        Chosen for "Kids on Course"

Students and staff celebrate being chosen for the Zach Johnson "Kids on Course" Program.

        Article from CRCSD Homepage
        http://www.cr.k12.ia.us/

Harrison and Van Buren elementary schools will pilot the new Zach Johnson Foundation "Kids on Course" program beginning with the 2011-12 school year. PGA Tour pro Zach Johnson held dual announcements at the schools in his hometown of Cedar Rapids on May 24.

"The Kids on Course program started as a simple question, what can we do that will change the lives of young people in my hometown?" Johnson noted. "What we came up with is what parents, teachers and non-profit leaders said would make a difference. Now the real work starts."

"Kids on Course" will establish a full time site coordinator at each school solely focused on supporting students' academic and personal success, as well as connecting families to their kids' educations. It will continue at least through the 2013-2014 school year, a three year minimum commitment. With an annual budget of $350,000, the Zach Johnson Foundation will invest at least $1,050,000 over three years at the two schools.

"Sixty percent of Harrison children experienced the flood in 2008 first hand," explained Linda Reysack, Harrison principal. "This is exactly the opportunity to give these students some much-deserved fun, as well as help them reach their academic potential."

"Our students love to learn, not just at school, but at an art museum, a farm, even a baseball field," added Cindy Stock, Van Buren principal. "The fact that a professional athlete is telling them their dreams are possible, and that he's helping make it happen, is just fantastic."

"Kids on Course" is a pilot program developed by the board of the Zach Johnson Foundation in cooperation with the District and the United Way of East Central Iowa.

"This program will help inspire the students of Harrison and Van Buren schools to make choices that will ensure the kind of broadened exposure that makes high school graduation a given, and that leads to fulfilling careers and productive citizenship," said Dr. Ruth White, Program Director.

        SINA

        Date:   July 28, 2011

        To:       Harrison Elementary Families
Subject:  Notice of Adequate Yearly Progress –
                       School Choice Options

Many of you are aware of the federal No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act, which requires schools to assess students annually and to meet student achievement goals.  If a school does not meet those assessment and achievement goals (termed “adequate yearly progress” or AYP) for two consecutive years, and if the school receives federal Title 1 funds, then it is placed on a federal “Schools in Need of Assistance (SINA)” list and subjected to federal sanctions.  Schools or districts are cited if they a) don’t meet 95% participation rate for assessments, b) don’t meet student achievement goals, or c) don’t meet attendance rate for elementary and middle schools or graduation rate for high school.

Harrison Elementary has been designated as a “School in Need of Assistance,” or SINA, under these federal guidelines because a portion of our students did not reach proficiency goals on their reading tests.  As a result of this designation our district is required by law to offer your child school choice to transfer to another school within the district that has not been designated as a school in need of assistance...  To read more, click to download the following file:
